What Do We Mean When We Say Leadership?

Leadership is one of those words, like collaboration, that everybody loves and uses. Popular as it is, it mostly goes undefined. Most executives, managers and staff believe that leadership is crucial to their success. A simple way to think about leadership is first to separate the role of leader from the activity of leading. When I speak of leadership I am talking about three core management activities that occur simultaneously and inter-dependently when leading effectively:

  1. Managing Self
  2. Managing Relationships
  3. Managing Motivation

Leadership is neither simple and requires practice of multiple skills that as they become mastered allow an individual to operate under the guidance of the following process of inquiry. The usefulness of this model is in becoming aware of the skills that allow you to develop answers to the questions.

The two most effective means for skills development are driven by:

  • modeling by those with formal authority
  • the support of a trained leadership specialist who can provide management frameworks, tools and feedback for improving the practice of leadership.

Please see Leadership Coaching and Consulting Services for further details on practical approaches to leadership development.
